Find out if your child is ready for school with this quiz

We’re thrilled to announce that the New Cambridge School blog is back! After a little break, we’re returning with even more energy to bring you valuable and practical content. Our aim is to provide you with useful tools to support you in the important task of guiding your child’s all-round development. We believe that education is a shared journey, and we want to walk beside you every step of the way—whether you’re already part of our community or thinking of joining it.

We understand that one of the biggest decisions you’ll make as a parent is knowing when the right time is for your child to begin their school journey. The transition from home to school can raise many questions and concerns. That’s why we’ve created a special resource we believe will be a great help.

If you’ve been wondering whether your little one is ready to start school, we’ve developed a simple quiz—designed by our team at the Learning Support Centre (LSC)—to help you find out. It will help you spot some key signs and see whether your child is prepared to take this important step. We’re here to guide you through the process!

Tick Yes or No according to your current situation:

1. Does your child show interest in learning new things?

Yes / No

2. Does your child adapt easily to routines or changes in their environment?

Yes / No

3. Would you like to further support your child’s physical, social-emotional and critical thinking development?

Yes / No

4. Is your home environment encouraging your child’s social, emotional and cognitive growth?

Yes / No

5. Do you feel your child would benefit from new spaces to interact and play with children their age, to strengthen their social skills?

Yes / No

6. Would you like your child to be in an environment that helps them continue developing both expressive and receptive language?

Yes / No

7. Do you believe emotional development and regulation are important for your child?

Yes / No

8. Is your child able to understand and follow simple instructions given by adults?

Yes / No

9. Do you provide emotional support and a sense of security by being a safe attachment figure for your child?

Yes / No

10. Do you set routines and assign simple tasks that encourage your child’s independence?

Yes / No

11. Does your child seem interested and excited about the idea of going to school?

Yes / No

12. Are you familiar with a school whose mission, approach and methodology you trust?

Yes / No

13. Do you feel confident in your child’s ability to adapt to a school environment?

Yes / No

If you answered Yes to more than 8 questions:

As a family, you are ready to begin the school journey. You recognise and understand your child’s needs and abilities, and by starting this new stage, they will continue to strengthen their social, cognitive and emotional skills with the full support of their educational environment.

If you answered Yes to between 4 and 7 questions:

You may not yet feel fully confident about starting formal schooling—and that’s perfectly okay. In the meantime, early stimulation programmes such as Little Skills by NCS are an excellent way to ease into this new environment. Your child can become familiar with routines and learning methods, and you’ll be able to observe their development and progress first-hand.

This quiz provides a general overview and is not a substitute for a professional assessment.

We hope this tool has been useful to you! Remember that every child is unique, and regardless of your result, we warmly invite you to get in touch with us to book an admissions appointment. Whether you’re interested in our early stimulation programme Little Skills, or ready to take the next step into schooling, we’re here to support and guide you through every part of the process.
